Financial crime testimonials |
Our client, a five star hotel, became suspicious of their Accounts Payable clerk after noticing that a particular customer account had been settled faster than was thought possible through the normal banking system. Our investigation showed that over a five year period the clerk had organized for some customers to pay their outstanding accounts to the clerk directly, usually in cash. Over the five year period the clerk fraudulently obtained $1.8m and posted thousands of false journal entries to disguise that the $1.8m had not been received by the hotel.
Through a combination of data analysis, email and customer account examination, and interviews of hotel employees, external parties and the clerk, we were able to obtain sufficient evidence for a successful referral to the police. The police investigation confirmed our findings and adopted the suspect interviews and witness statements obtained.
After the clerk pleaded guilty to the theft of the monies, the NSW District Court convicted the clerk to fives years imprisonment with a non parole period of three years. Our client was able to use this conviction and the other evidence obtained to successful lodge a claim with their insurer who paid the client the sum of the fraud loss and the cost of our investigation.
