Deloitte and Kaggle churn prediction

Deloitte Australia has been working with Kaggle and a major insurance provider to run a competition to develop the best customer churn model. The competition, which is the first to run under the alliance between Deloitte Australia and Kaggle, kicked off on Wednesday 23 October 2013.

Although our client has a good understanding of what their customer lapse rate is, they would like to predict ahead of time which customers are likely to churn and when. Understanding who those clients are, and what factors or behaviours they exhibit that are correlated with churn, will enable our client to develop strategies and targeted intervention programs to improve customer retention.

Deloitte Australia’s role in this project has been to work with the client to define the problem, identify and structure relevant data sources, manage the project, and ultimately host and launch the competition through the Kaggle platform.

Only elite Kaggle ‘Masters’ (the top 300 performing data scientists from a crowd of 120,000) who agree to the terms of the competition have access to data, and are ultimately able to enter the competition. This means we are getting the top data scientists competing against each other to develop the best performing model for our client.
