Program Assurance

Deloitte ImageToday’s business environment is characterised by higher levels of accountability and the ever the increasing scrutiny of the community, shareholders, government and the law. Program Boards, key stakeholders and project team members are also seeking greater levels of confidence in a project’s ability to deliver their intended benefits in the most effective ways possible.

Many organisations also assume that it is the role of the project management team to check this – and in part, they are right. But as a stakeholder, can you really be sure that they have all bases covered?  Could the project team have inadvertently missed a critical step, or not adequately mitigated a major risk?

Program assurance helps serve this need. By being independent of the daily activities performed by the program team, program assurance can provide insight into areas that may not have been considered. In effect, program assurance serves as the 'eyes and ears' of program stakeholders – what the program assurance team see and hear about the state of the project contributes significantly to the confidence felt by the stakeholders.

Deloitte have developed a program assurance methodology that helps stakeholders answer:  “How do I really know that the program is under control?”  With our approach, this can be achieved by focussing on three key areas:

  • program management delivery - assessing effectiveness of the processes, tools & methods to manage project execution
  • technical solution - assessing if the program’s solution is fit for purpose
  • program environment - assessing the effectiveness of the management environment which supports the program.
