Intelligent PMO

Deloitte ImageTraditional Program Management Offices (PMO) devote much of their effort assisting projects achieve time, cost and scope/quality outcomes.

Whilst these are important and necessary criteria for successful projects, they often do not address the deeper and fundamental needs of projects.

That is, how well do they:

  1. satisfy key stakeholders
  2. deliver benefits
  3. manage the risks that could adversely affect stakeholders and project benefits.

The Intelligent PMO (IPMO) takes on a more pro-active role within programs of work than traditional PMOs. Its primary focus is not to overwhelm the project team with detailed processes and standards, but rather to assess, inform, influence and then tailor project methods that fit the needs of the project.

IPMO’s are also more actively involved in stakeholder management and work collaboratively with the program’s project managers. The IPMO for example is staffed by expert project managers who can provide assistance and detailed project management help if it is required.

Here’s how Deloitte’s IPMO approach can produce serious benefits for your organisation:

  • program design and control – drive and facilitate governance and assurance practice
  • program support – tailored project controls and administration
  • risk and issue management – proactive mitigation of risks & issues. Not just administration
  • planning and progress reporting – chase and enforce planning and reporting activities
  • stakeholder management - involved stakeholder engagement. Not just planning.
