Young Australian of the Year Jessica Watson plans this year to captain the youngest ever crew to compete in the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, and she’s turned to Deloitte to help her develop and hone the team leadership skills she will need.
Deloitte consultant Chris Lewin will act as coach and mentor to Jessica, drawing on his own experience in captaining the youngest crew to successfully cross Bass Strait in the 2004 Rolex Sydney Hobart.
As an experienced sailor Chris is the ideal mentor for Jessica in her new endeavour having completed four successful Rolex Sydney Hobart campaigns.
Jessica will undertake the Rolex Sydney Hobart in a boat that was previously campaigned by Chris, entering the competitive Sydney 38 class.
An intensive three month training programme will commence in October. The programme includes a specific workshop to prepare the young crew members for some of the challenges they may face by being part of a high profile campaign, including how to deal with the media and effectively build and manage their own personal brand.
Equipping the crew and Jessica for their future endeavours whatever they may be.
