Queensland Energy and Resources Index

Issue 09, March 2011 Quarter Edition

Deloitte, Bamboo appWelcome to Issue 09 of the Deloitte Queensland Energy & Resources Index (Deloitte Qld E&R Index), a review of Queensland companies listed on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) within the energy and resources industries. A summary of market movements and the quarterly league table can be viewed in the document below.

During the March 2011 quarter, the Deloitte Qld E&R Index decreased 3.3%, while the ASX All Ordinaries increased 1.7% over the same period. The poor relative performance of the Deloitte Qld E&R Index during the March 2011 quarter can be attributed to concerns over demand for commodities following the devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan in early March, as well as the ongoing conflicts across the Middle East.
In the 12 months to 31 March 2011, the Deloitte Qld E&R Index increased 36.9%, compared with a 0.7% increase for the ASX All Ordinaries. This strong annual performance is largely due to the exceptional performance of Lihir Gold Limited up until its merger with Newcrest Mining Limited. There are currently 84 companies listed on the Deloitte Qld E&R Index. 42 companies enjoyed an increase in market capitalisation during the quarter, while 39 companies decreased and the remainder were steady.

In this edition, we profile some of the key issues currently affecting energy and resources firms. We also feature commentary regarding a number of issues currently impacting the wider sector:
