Deloitte kicking goals for education and underprivileged young peopleDOWNLOAD
Friday, 29 July 2011: Professional services firm Deloitte, today announced the appointment of Vanessa Cover, the first Australian Fellow to the global program - Deloitte21 Challenge. This unique global education initiative aims at helping underprivileged young people to acquire the education and skills needed to lead their communities, and the world, to a brighter future.
Vanessa Cover, Director of Corporate Responsibility at Deloitte, leads the firm’s national corporate social responsibility strategy and program and brings to this project her experience and skills in business consulting, strategy, risk and change management.
Vanessa will be working closely with the High Resolves Initiative, a not-for profit, non-religious organisation that seeks to motivate high school students to develop the mindsets and skills to act as purposeful global citizens and lead their communities and the world to a brighter future.
“The world is currently facing a growing talent gap between what potential workers are learning and the actual skills needed to thrive today and in the future," said Giam Swiegers, CEO of Deloitte Australia, who was representing Australia at the World Meeting of the Deloitte21 Challenge.
Mehrdad Baghai, co-founder and co-chair of High Resolves Initiative said, “We are thrilled to have Deloitte’s support and assistance as we help more Australian students to develop the direction, capability and confidence they need to succeed in their school life and beyond.”
High Resolves Initiative runs two major programs that build on each other; the Global Citizenship Program and the Global Leadership Program. These programs are delivered through a creative mix of interactive simulations, role-playing, community focussed projects and small group discussions to help teenage students in year 8 through to year 10 to grow as leaders while working to improve their school and society.
The Australian Fellow will focus on building capacity in this unique educational program, with a goal of producing further scalability for the programs to reach a greater number of schools and underprivileged students across Australia. Specific focus will be on the development of organisational design and technological innovation.
By harnessing the intellectual capital and skills of Deloitte, Deloitte21 Challenge focuses on investing in innovative programs that have the potential to transform the way education and skills are attained. Deloitte professionals work, alongside educators, social entrepreneurs, not-for-profits and government to apply their business skills to help maximise the reach and impact of emerging and existing educational programs.
