The floods that inundated Australia are proving to be one of the most expensive disasters in the nation’s history. As a result, the economy took a big hit recently. The outlook remains bright, however; reconstruction spending, rising commodity prices and several new developments in the pivotal mining industry will likely continue to power Australia’s economic engine.

At this point, the tightening of monetary policy appears to have slowed economic growth but there’s still a tall order ahead. Policymakers are torn between concerns about inflation and fear that the fight against inflation will result in a much higher-valued currency. Substantial investment and the efficiency of that capital pose additional risks to the longer-term outlook.

Robust first quarter results have set the stage for a sustained recovery this year. Private consumption will likely remain the main driver, while exports and investment are expected to provide an additional impetus to growth. The central bank is expected to keep a close eye on the possible end of the government’s fuel subsidy scheme and accelerating global commodity prices.

Even before the earthquake devastated parts of Japan, the economy was facing slow growth, a high fiscal deficit and chronic deflation. The disaster has weakened conditions even further. As exports and consumer spending continue to decline, the economy could take up to six months to get back on its feet.

The Thai economy is currently growing in line with expectations but the outlook for the country is mixed. On the plus side, rising farm income, lower unemployment and higher wages augur well for the economy. On the other hand, inflation and an uncertain political climate pose downside risks.
