Digital disruption in retail

Deloitte | Digital disruptionDeloitte’s research paper, Digital disruption: short fuse, big bang?, highlights that retail will be the industry sector hardest hit by digital change in the next one to two years.

The paper considers the magnitude of the digital transformation within Australian business and government – the size of the ‘bang’ – as well as how quickly 18 industry sectors will be affected – the length of the ‘fuse’. In determining the size of the bang from digital disruption, Deloitte looked at an industry's degree of exposure to online, mobile, social media and cloud technologies. It also looked at the use of fixed and mobile digital technologies among customers, and the quality of IT infrastructure. From this, it has developed a Digital Disruption Map that plots the exposure of each industry to digital change.

Retail businesses will be affected differently by digital disruption, depending on their size, location and business purpose.  But all face clear challenges in managing the digital revolution.
