Telecare and telehealth: A game changer for health and social care
The Federal Government in Australia has been actively promoting the use of telecare and telehealth, specifically within the senior living sector. Examples include the availability of government grants and incentives to RACFs on the use of telehealth and the promotion of telecare in a community care environment.
This is against a backdrop of people living longer, increasing government budgetary pressures and consumers wanting a greater say in managing their own care.
Deloitte UK recently produced a report on the use of telecare and telehealth. Whilst the report draws on experiences in the United Kingdom, there are a number of parallels with Australia.
The report provides a synopsis of the available evidence on the costs and benefits of telehealth and telecare. This analysis is based on, amongst other things, case studies, discussions with key stakeholders and our own experience with working with technology companies and health and social care providers.
In particular, the case studies (11 in total) provide interesting insights on the potential for, and the potential implications of, telecare or telehealth.
