Fed Cloud: The future of public sector workPublic sector work and service delivery models are being given new focus globally given widespread pressures to reduce costs in the ongoing wake/ second wave of the GFC. However there are other reasons for revisiting traditional bureaucratic models.

In this paper our US Innovation in Government think tank draws from one ‘game-changing’ concept in the technology world – cloud computing – to explore how a more flexible and adaptable (as well as a lower cost) government workforce could be accomplished. The argument is that today’s government is being asked to solve the problems of the 21st century with a workforce and managerial structure designed for a different era, and that this does not take full advantage of advances in workforce innovations. It suggests that if major organisations – as well as small start ups – can increase their flexibility by sharing storage space, information and resources in a “cloud”, why not move beyond computing and apply the cloud model to the workforce?

This provocative look at how to structure public sector work takes its cue from the talents and preferences of the new generation of workers who are entering the workforce, particularly how the new generation of entrants to paid employment interact with technology. It also contains three case studies which may be of interest to Australian public sector readers.
