Mining’s top ten issues for 2010

A look at ten of the top issues mining companies will face

miningtop_10In mining, volatility is the rule rather than the exception. As Deloitte’s head of mining globally, Tony Zoghby says, “The past 12 months have reinforced the importance of taking a ‘stronger for longer’ view. To survive ongoing volatility, companies need to enhance their operational excellence and plan for varying potential scenarios. Putting bandaids over endemic issues does not help.”

To help miners deal with the issues projected to continue, Deloitte’s mining practitioners from around the world discuss ten of the top issues emerging in the sector globally. In Tracking the trends 2010 some issues from last year’s report, Tracking the trends 2009: The top 10 global mining issues remain, although their focus has changed. New issues are also discussed.

The ten issues discussed in Tracking the trends 2010 include:

  • Securing local supply
  • Commodities, currencies and cost
  • Ramping back up
  • The spread of sustainability
  • No easy money
  • Contending with a changing climate
  • Extreme mining
  • The valuation abyss
  • Big brother is watching
  • No bridge to cross
