Deloitte Australia forms alliance with Kaggle to tap largest global data scientist community

28 May 2013:  Deloitte Australia announced today it had entered into a preferred alliance with Kaggle, a leading platform in solving data science challenges.

The alliance combines Kaggle’s nearly 100,000-strong data scientists, who provide sophisticated real-world data science solutions through Kaggle Connect, with the 6,000 plus analytics professionals across Deloitte Analytics’ global network.  

Kaggle competitions are used to identify the world’s best data scientists and to determine which client problems this elite community can best address.

Deloitte Analytics, in Australia and around the world, helps organisations meet their information and data analytics needs, spanning key business functions such as customer, finance, risk, supply chain, operational, and workforce analytics.  

Anthony Viel, National Managing Partner, Deloitte Analytics in Australia said: “We are tremendously excited about the opportunities this alliance can provide to our clients.”

“The Kaggle model, and Kaggle’s success, has really challenged the status quo in the increasingly sophisticated field of advanced statistical analysis, forecasting and predictive modelling.

“We can now help clients apply data to yield even more effective and timely business insights. This might be via Deloitte Analytics’ wide-ranging in-house capabilities but also now, where appropriate, recommending a client use the unique services offered by Kaggle.

“This might involve participating in a competition or hiring a data scientist using Kaggle Connect, with the outcome further infusing Deloitte’s insights with new perspectives and delivering a truly distinctive solution to any number of strategic issues and decisions.”

Kaggle President Jeremy Howard said: “Data science incorporates techniques and theories from a variety of fields to draw insights from data that, while not immediately apparent, are extremely powerful.”

“The real challenge is to ask the right question and to get the best thinkers focused on the solution. Kaggle has pulled together the elite of the data scientist community and deployed them as a highly focused, on-demand resource to do just that.

“Combined with Deloitte’s deep technical and industry experience, we will provide a real differentiator – a ‘must have’ offering – in the marketplace, one that will help our clients while also helping our growth and identification of new opportunities.”

Mr Howard pointed to the fact that Kaggle competitions have historically been overwhelmingly successful. For example, one recent competition with the American insurance provider Allstate produced an algorithm that was a 271% improvement over Allstate’s internal version and an 83% improvement over the expected best case development of a similar model using other traditional third-party resources.

Deloitte Australia Chief Strategy Officer Gerhard Vorster said: “This alliance will provide yet another strong point of differentiation for Deloitte in both the Australian and potentially global professional services markets.”

“It is also indicative of the impact digital disruption is having within professional services, as new digital business models such as that offered by Kaggle provide clients with innovative solutions alongside economies of scale and scope.

“Deloitte has deep industry experience across its operations, including a truly advanced analytics capability and understanding of decision-makers’ roles, to maximise and capture the value of data by turning rapidly growing and diverse data sources into useful and actionable insights.”

Mr Viel said the relationship with Deloitte Australia was Kaggle’s first global alliance.

“While the initial focus will be on Deloitte and Kaggle delivering client insights and solutions in the Australian market, we intend to take this new capability to Deloitte’s global network of member firms and their clients via the Australia firm soon after,” he said.

Deloitte has a defined global alliance strategy to ensure that its clients have access to the broadest spectrum of analytics services. Kaggle joins a prestigious slate of Deloitte alliances that include SAS, Tableau, IBM, Qliktech and Micro Strategies.
