Governments around the world are forced to address “The Gap”: a twofold problem comprising a fiscal gap (the deficit) between revenue and expenditure, and a performance gap between the way government typically operates and the realities it faces in terms of expectations and outcomes.
This research is of interest in Australia as it reviews the path a number of national governments have taken towards fiscal sustainability, exploring the challenges posed by the current economic landscape and proposing a framework based on lessons learned to successfully address likely issues and navigate a successful journey towards achieving fiscally sustainable government.
