In response to natural disasters, Deloitte provides their staff the opportunity to donate to emergency appeals as they arise.
Here are a few examples of how we have collectively made a response:
As the largest typhoon on record the Philippines had seen, its devastation left thousands of people displaced from their homes and a death toll of more than 5,000 people. With our dollar-for-dollar matching, and the generosity of our people, we were able to contribute a total of $73,476 to the Oxfam appeal.
NSW was engulfed in a series of bushfires that emergency services battled tirelessly to contain. Hundreds of homes were destroyed, and fatalities were reported. We contributed $43,046 to the Australian Red Cross to assist with their efforts in helping the people and communities affected by the bushfires.
In 2011 the people of Ethiopia, Somalia and Kenya faced the worst drought the region has seen in 60 years, inclusive of dollar-matching Deloitte people collectively raised $75,000. This amount has assisted Oxfam to reach three million people with clean water, food and basic sanitation.
Deloitte raised a collective $146,685 for the disaster in Japan and, as a firm, we have also donated $50,000 to alleviate the suffering in Christchurch. These donations assisted the Red Cross in providing vital medical care, personal support to affected people, emergency kits and blankets.
The Deloitte Foundation launched its response to the Queensland floods and dollar-matched donations to the emergency relief appeal of $60,000.
