The Technology Fast 50 Hall of Fame

Newcomer ComTel wins Deloitte 2008 Technology Fast 50

Professional services firm Deloitte today announced the winners of Australia’s 2008 Deloitte Technology Fast 50 Program. This year’s leading company was ComTel, a listed mobile network operator with record growth of 1302% over the last year. It was the company’s inaugural entry onto the league table.

Now in its eighth year, the program recognises 50 dynamic and fast-growing technology companies that have shown sustained growth over the last three years.

Joshua Tanchel, leader of Deloitte’s technology Fast 50 Program noted that half the index included new entrants and that there were many more software companies than in 2007.

“In 2007, only 14% of entrants were software companies. This year this figure has more than doubled to 38% as we increasingly see innovation driving Australian software development. And it is innovation which is expanding the opportunities for these companies both locally and globally.”

Total revenue for the current Fast 50 winners was $894 million, a decline in total revenue compared with the previous three years. The revenue figure was impacted by more companies having revenue in the $1-20 million categories than in previous years.

“Younger companies, such as software companies, dominate the index highlighting how smaller IT companies can exude growth, confidence and sustainability, even in the current economic climate,” added Mr Tanchel.

The keynote speaker at the Deloitte Technology Fast 50 awards ceremony was David Shein, Chairman of Macromatix, a software developer providing a specialised online management solution that had successfully enabled retailers to better manage their businesses.

This year the fastest growing companies in the Deloitte Technology Fast 50 were mobile content and wireless service. For the third consecutive year, internet based companies dominated the field with 44% of the 2007 Technology Fast 50 engaged in internet based businesses.

This year the average total revenue of Deloitte Technology Fast 50 participants was smaller. Deloitte Partner, Julia Bickerstaff noted that “total revenue fell to $903m, less than half the previous year’s average total revenues.

However this decline really underlines the changing type of companies in the Fast 50, with this year’s table dominated by younger companies in newer industry segments." The Fast 50 benchmarking survey this year highlighted a dramatic increase in the number of companies seeking business opportunities outside of Australia.

The 2007 Rising Star Award was won by Amethon Solutions (Asia Pacific) Pty Limited. Amethon Solutions is a private Australian company specialising in mobile analytics solutions for the telecommunications industry.
