Deloitte Ranks #2 in Kennedy’s Global Energy Consulting Marketplace Report

New York, 7 June 2010 –Deloitte announced the results of Kennedy Consulting Research & Advisory’s recent Energy Consulting Marketplace 2009-2012 report:

  • Deloitte ranks as the second largest organization for energy consulting by measure of aggregate global revenue.
  • Deloitte is a leader for energy consulting by a measure of aggregate global revenue.
  • Deloitte is a leader in energy consulting capabilities and has the greatest breadth of capability of any organization.
  • Deloitte has one of the largest and strongest upstream practices.
  • Deloitte is one of only two organizations with at least 5 percent aggregate market share.

Deloitte member firms have established oil and gas Centers of Excellence, including Centers for Energy Solutions in Houston and Washington D.C., in Calgary, Madrid, London, Aberdeen, Rotterdam, Oslo, Moscow, Almaty (Kazakhstan), Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires, Johannesburg, Singapore, and Dubai. These Centers of Excellence facilitate client service and solution development and leverage the combined the strength of Deloitte member firms’ network of oil and gas specialists.

The report highlights a number of strengths:

Deloitte capabilities in oil & gas consulting and advisory
Dick Cooper, Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu Limited (DTTL) Global Energy Consulting Leader notes, “To help Deloitte member firms’ oil & gas clients address issues critical to the industry, including carbon management, ongoing cost management regulatory complexity, ongoing mergers and acquisitions, and health and safety, Deloitte has executed a number of acquisitions of smaller consulting firms around the world, which has greatly strengthened Deloitte’s client service offerings and capabilities.”

Cooper added, “Over the past several years, Deloitte member firms have also been developing services in the area of climate change and carbon markets, resulting in a geographically diverse group of advisors who have successfully built significant practices in this area.

Kennedy’s response:

  • “Deloitte… has strong IT, risk, and industry-specific capabilities, and its energy practice continues to grow."
  • “Deloitte continues to strengthen its industry-specific capabilities, and energy is one of its growth industries. For growth, the practice is focusing on expanding its technology capabilities, particularly around enterprise architecture, upstream ERP, and cyber security. It is aggressively hiring experienced consultants with engineering and geology backgrounds. Deloitte is another firm that differentiates through authoring a wealth of thought leadership on the oil & gas industry.”
  • “Within oil & gas, Deloitte is particularly strong in providing support around M&A and technology (ERP, information management, data analytics), as well as in developing and executing a sustainable growth strategy (services include partnerships, sustainable cost reduction, managing through up and down cycles, and talent management).”
  • “Deloitte also has one of the largest energy risk management practices, significant experience implementing trading and energy risk management systems and processes.”

On NOC services
Peter Bommel, DTTL Global Industry Leader, Energy & Resources observes, “Opportunities are huge in emerging markets, though recruitment is difficult. Companies should develop local talent and bring in experts to those locations from other regions."

Kennedy’s response:

  •  “The change in client distribution toward NOCs means that energy practices must develop targeted offerings for these buyers, as well as build refined knowledge of regional differences, business practices, etc. As an example, four years ago Deloitte developed a dedicated NOC practice to target the specific needs of NOCs. This was a smart move for Deloitte and is a good example of what other consulting practices might think to do.”

On tax advisory services in oil & gas

Kennedy’s response:

“Deloitte has a very strong oil & gas tax practice, which leads to the firm providing a significant amount of tax advisory to clients.”

It is important to note that Kennedy’s definition of ‘consulting’ includes significant portions of member firms’ Consulting, ERS, FAS, and Tax Advisory competencies. Equally, Kennedy’s definition of ‘energy’ encompasses only Deloitte member firms’ Oil and Gas sector expertise. Kennedy includes Utilities within a separate Utilities Consulting Marketplace report, and petrochemicals within its Manufacturing Consulting Marketplace report.
