World Economic Forum on Latin America 2009: Deloitte involvement


Led by Deloitte EMEA CEO, Alberto Terol, a delegation of Deloitte executives participated in the World Economic Forum on Latin America where they spoke on topics ranging from Latin American trade regulations to closing the gap between consumers and sustainability.

The Deloitte delegation joined business and government leaders from around the region in helping to address the major economic, political, and social issues needed to ensure stable, long-term growth in Latin America.

Preventing trade barriers and protectionism: A regional imperative
Alberto Terol served as a moderator in a session focused on future trade regulations in Latin America. Trade-facilitating regulations and procedures in the region are considered insufficient, inefficient, and negatively affected by current financial constraints. In addition, trade finance costs have exploded as markets have become severely illiquid. The discussion focused on:

  • How can Latin America transform and improve administration and regulation at its borders?
  • How can cooperation between appropriate authorities on trade facilitation and customs compliance issues be strengthened?

Representatives from the World Trade Organization; the Ministry of Commerce and Industry of Panama; and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Tourism of Colombia served as panelists during the session.

Private industry workshop

Deloitte’s Global Consumer Business industry team is an official advisor to the World Economic Forum Consumer Business industry partnership, providing intellectual capital and contributing research to the various project initiatives.

Engaging CEOs from around the world, Deloitte leaders participated in high-level private discussions on sustainability and how it can create wealth for tomorrow’s consumers and value for tomorrow’s businesses. Under the theme, “Sustainability as a growth engine: Engaging consumers,” the private industry workshop examined tangible strategies and business models to engage the Latin American consumer in a meaningful exchange on sustainability.

Deloitte Brazil Partner, Marcelo Drügg Barreto Vianna, moderated a session in the workshop under his role as Brazilian Vice-President of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) and Chairman of ICC Sustainable Development and Energy Committee. The session titled “The emerging consumer: Aspirations and realities” explored today’s consumers in Latin America, what drives their behavior, and what societal and environmental impacts they expect from business.

International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) sustainability lunch
Prior to the official opening of the summit, a lunch was sponsored by ICC Committee on Sustainable Development and Energy. During the event, the results of Deloitte’s survey “The sustainability chain” were presented to representatives from major industries and government and regulatory officials. The survey seeks to identify the different advantages and challenges that local companies face towards today’s sustainability issues and how it influences the relationship between organizations, consumers, and the market in general.
