Accountability and responsibility at the board level has never been more apparent, where the requirement for a sound system of internal control is becoming one of managements main concerns. In light of the recent public scandals concerning a number of fortune 500 companies, new guidance and regulations to address the issue of internal control has been released. Sarbanes Oxley, Basel II and CEO/CFO Certification are a few of the recent regulatory developments affecting North America and Europe. Coupled with this is an increase in customer awareness of the need for strong internal control and, as a result, many service providers are undertaking third party reviews (i.e. SAS70, FRAG 21, Section 5900) to assess and report on control design and operating effectiveness.
