Our Customs & International Trade team provides strategic advice to clients on Customs and Excise issues to reduce costs (including duty) and ensure compliance.
After establishing a clear understanding of the business and its relationship with overseas suppliers and customers, our specialists will evaluate the opportunities to generate cost savings for your business. We then suggest solutions, taking into account factors such as transactional structures, the supply and value chains, tariff rates, government programs and concessions.
All goods imported into Australia are subject to import (customs) duties. Although in some cases the rate is “free”, the general (and most common rate) is 5%. Excise duty applies to petroleum products, alcohol and tobacco produced or manufactured in Australia.
Our team specialises in the concessional schemes and preferential rates which can mitigate the customs or excise duty payable. These include:
- Enhanced Project By-Law Scheme
- customs duty concessions for major projects procuring more than $10 million of eligible goods (in certain industries)
- successful application results in duty free entry of eligible goods
- Tariff Concession System
- application where substitutable goods are not available in Australia in the ordinary course of business
- successful application results in duty free entry of goods covered by the concession
- Fuel Tax Credits
- provides off-road credit and on-road credit for eligible fuels used in eligible activities
- Duty Drawback and Tradex
- clawback of duty where imported goods are re-exported.
Our Customs & International Trade team can deliver savings directly to your bottom-line boosting profitability as well as helping your business to compete on price within the market place.
