Automatic identification using RFID — radio frequency identification — technologies promises to unleash tremendous new savings in the consumer packaged goods value chain. Recent announcements by Wal-Mart, Gillette and others signal an immediate commitment to this technology.
Initially, pallet and case level tagging will enable cheaper and better asset and merchandise tracking, stock taking, inventory management and accounting of merchandise in the retailer's store and manufacturer's distribution chain.
