Survey reveals impending skill shortages

Today's workforce issues have the potential to impact business performance in the coming years and businesses are expressing growing concern finds this Deloitte Research survey. When asked to select the one issue that will most impact their business performance, 43 percent of respondents chose retention of key talent. Almost three-quarters (72 percent) of companies surveyed said they are concerned that the inadequate skills of incoming workers will negatively affect their bottom line.

Among the key findings:

  • One-third (33 percent) of participating companies state that 11 percent or more of their workforce is scheduled to retire in the next two to three years and 31 percent have discussed retirement or the impending skills shortage at the board of directors level.
  • Between 10 and 15 percent of respondents are reporting critical shortages in both the R&D and sales functions.
  • Approximately 60 percent of survey respondents plan to increase experienced employee recruitment, while 42 percent plan to increase campus recruitment.
