A new package of international tax measures passed by the Senate today will help to turn the tide against the complexity of Australia’s international tax rules, according to the Big Four professional services firm Deloitte. Deloitte says the measures will help to attract more multinational investment. Deloitte International Tax Partner Joe Niven said the new rules would largely repeal a maze of provisions dealing with the taxation of foreign dividends. Investors who have reaped the benefits of rising property and equity prices in the past year face heavy targeting by the Australian Taxation Office for capital gains tax compliance, according to Deloitte. Deloitte says the ATO is laying down the law to investors in a recent bulletin* outlining the focus of its tax compliance program. The 2003-04 financial year will set new records for IPO activity, according to Deloitte Corporate Finance’s quarterly review of Initial Public Offerings. Preliminary report results, released today, show that 153 floats are set to raise a total of $10.8 billion by the time the year draws to a close at the end of this month. The number of IPOs is set to increase by 178% to 153 in 2003-04, while the amount of new equity raised will jump by 155% to $10.8 billion. Deloitte has warned Western Australian pubs, clubs, and casino operators to thoroughly prepare for the introduction of tougher anti-smoking laws. Experience on the east coast shows that the introduction of anti-smoking laws will have a significant short term effect on cash flows generated by these venues. Relocating employees will get some minor additional tax breaks under changes proposed in the Federal Budget, according to Deloitte. The proposed changes include an exemption from Fringe Benefits Tax (“FBT”) for benefits associated with the engagement of a relocation consultant in addition to the broadening of the scope of the exemption available for the costs of purchase of a home in the new location.
