| Budget 2006: Business tax reforms half baked |
10 May 2006 |
Depreciation and Fringe Benefits Tax reforms will make Australia more internationally competitive, but only goes half way by failing to address key observations of the Warburton-Hendy report, according to Deloitte International Tax Partner, Paul Glover. “The improved depreciation deductions will save business $3.7 billion on new plant and equipment allowances and $900 million of FBT through reductions in the top personal income tax rate,” he said. The Warburton-Hendy international tax benchmarking study, released last month, demonstrated that Australia is at risk of becoming one of the least attractive countries in which... |

10 May 2006 |

Those who had put off funding their superannuation to later may have missed the boat, Deloitte Tax and Superannuation Partner John Randall said. “As the proposals now stand, they seriously disadvantage those who up till now have not been able to fund at their desired levels, particularly those currently in their late 40s.” “While the Treasurer’s proposals for tax free benefits will be a boon for those with retirements looming, only those who have been funding at maximum levels will get the fullest advantage of the changes,” he said. If implemented, then the level of undeducted contributions will be capped at... |

| Budget 2006: Corporate Australia snubbed in Budget |
10 May 2006 |

Canberra’s increasing reliance on corporate Australia for its total tax take demonstrates it is still not taking business tax reform and international competitiveness seriously, according to Deloitte tax policy partner Miquel Timmers. “The Federal Government has become over-reliant on corporate Australia to fund strong budget surpluses. In 2004-05 the Government collected 23% of the total federal tax revenues from corporate Australia. This is set to increase to 27% in 2006-07, representing an increase of $15 billion. “The recent Warburton-Hendy international comparison of Australia’s tax system to the OECD weighted... |

| Budget 2006: Depreciation boost for hardware providers, but software providers miss out |
10 May 2006 |
IT hardware providers stand to be one of the big winners from the flow on effects of the increase in accelerated depreciation rates to 200% of the base rate announced in last night’s Federal Budget. Deloitte Corporate Tax Partner Stuart Osborne said hardware providers could see an uptake in sales as the higher up front tax deductions become more attractive. “The new depreciation rate will secure deductions which will more appropriately align to the decline in value of the assets with factors such as technological obsolescence. “For example a laptop computer purchased after 9 May 2006 will attract a deduction of... |
