Receivers appointed to South Burnett Beef 15 May 2007 Late yesterday afternoon, John Greig and David Lombe of Deloitte were appointed Receivers and Managers of South Burnett Beef Trading Pty Ltd and Baron Group Australia Pty Ltd.

The appointment followed difficult trading conditions in March and April of this year due to a combination of factors including:

  • the rise of the Australian dollar above 83 US cents
  • the large fall in prices in the Korean Beef Market
  • the flow on effect of this fall to the Japanese Beef Market
  • the non payment of a significant debt owed to South Burnett...
Business succession – contingency plan is vital 15 May 2007 All business owners should account for the company’s strategic direction when building the succession plan as well as providing for the business’ survival in the event of death or disability of key management according to Deloitte Tax Partner, Craig Holland.

“Many private business owners have not taken the time to develop a written business plan, which is current and relevant. As businesses grow, the management-succession process becomes more and more complicated, which is why they may avoid the task,” Mr Holland said.

“A formal plan must be developed, implemented and monitored in...
Budget helps global innovators 10 May 2007 “SMEs in emerging industries or innovative businesses, who want to collaborate globally can now benefit from proposed grants and industry support activities announced in the Federal Budget,” said Peter Jordan, Partner Deloitte Growth Solutions.

Budget ignores IGR findings on infrastructure 09 May 2007 The Budget proposed expenditure on infrastructure does not reflect the findings of the Government’s own Intergenerational Report in terms of the pressing need to fund the infrastructure backlog according to Deloitte head of Infrastructure, Roger Black.

“The second Intergenerational Report highlighted the need for the infrastructure backlog to be tackled immediately. If, as the Treasurer stated on the release of the Intergenerational Report, we are currently in the ‘demographic sweet spot’ with the imbalance between generations increasing from now on, then the Budget should have addressed the infrastructure...

Small business snubbed 08 May 2007  The 2007 Federal Budget fails to deliver tax and red tape simplification for small business says Deloitte Growth Solutions Partner, David Pring.

“This Budget does not deliver on promises to small business to encourage them to expand offshore as no new assistance methods are offered.”

“Life for small business has not been made easier, with no significant tax simplification measures announced. The change to annual BAS statements will only have an impact on micro businesses with turnovers of less than $75,000.

“Basically the burdens of red tape will remain for small businesses.”

“There has been no...

Budget angles for savvy investors 08 May 2007  The Budget did very little for investors unless you are fortunate to hold stocks which will reap more business from the budget incentives or expenditures.

“The horse may have bolted for those stocks which gained an obvious and direct benefit from the budget. Savvy investors may still identify opportunities in companies which will benefit just as much but less obviously,” said Les Szekely, Director Deloitte Growth Solutions.

“For example solar panel manufactures and distributors should already be smiling with the doubling of the Government rebate from $4,000 up to $8,000. However the indirect impact on raw material and...

Companies – are they still attractive for SMEs and contractors? 08 May 2007 Changes announced in the Budget for year end 2008/09 are likely to encourage small business operators and contractors to favour partnerships, trusts and other alternative structures over the use of companies, according to Deloitte Tax Partner David Pring.

“This year’s changes build on the changes concerning tax rate reductions which were announced in last year’s Budget,” he said.

In the past, there has been an incentive for small business operators and contractors to incorporate due to the significant differential between the personal and company income tax rates. As this differential has now been narrowed further,...

Environment and educational incentives will benefit small business 08 May 2007  The Budget focus on environmental technologies and vocational training may assist small businesses who provide products and services in these areas said Deloitte Growth Solutions Partner, Peter Jordan.

“Rebates and incentives for Australians to install environmentally friendly technologies such as solar hot water systems, solar panels and rain water tanks will provide opportunities for manufacturers and installers of those technologies – often small or family run businesses throughout our communities.

“Support for apprenticeship programs can also provide relief for small businesses who are struggling to access skilled...
