Deloitte’s sector expertise has been rewarded with three HgCapital Rainmaker awards: the largest number of sector awards given to a single adviser. The Rainmaker competition honours the most successful deal originators in the UK private equity mid-market.
Commenting on Deloitte’s success in the Rainmaker awards, Chris Ward, Head of Corporate Finance, said: “These awards are a testament to the value that industry sector expertise can add to corporate finance transactions. We strongly believe that the best advice comes from a team with extensive market sector knowledge coupled with strong execution skills.”

20 April 2005 |
The television industry is undergoing a fundamental transformation according to a report launched today by Deloitte’s Technology, Media & Telecommunications Industry Group. It is evolving from being mass-market, single-event, and broadcast-focused, into a sector which is far more complex but potentially more profitable.
“The most significant change occurring is the fragmentation of audiences and the consumption of content across an expanding array of media, channels and... |

| Aviation emissions trading alone will be of limited benefit to the environment |
18 April 2005 |
Including aviation in the second phase of the EU emissions trading scheme is likely to have a relatively modest additional impact on reducing the industry’s contribution to global warming, according to Deloitte research. Robin Pratt, transport economics consulting director at Deloitte says: “Although Aviation emissions trading could help to slow the longer term growth in aviation emissions, variations in the future price of oil are likely to have a far greater impact on fuel consumption and ticket prices than emissions trading.
“Due to the nature of the aviation industry, a trading regime which is not part of an integrated European... |

| Fuel cells debut: flexible power |
12 April 2005 |
Deloitte has today forecast that over the course of the year there will be a significant number of commercial launches of ethanol-based fuel cells - both as standalone products and as the integrated power source for leading-edge consumer products. One of the first examples of this has been the recent announcement by IBM and Sanyo that they are working together on a hybrid power system for portable computers that combines batteries with a methanol fuel cell.
Nick Griffin, technology partner at Deloitte, comments: “Fuel cells will provide enough power for several days of continuous use and many weeks of stand-by time, transforming the... |

| Advocate General’s opinion supports Customs’ claims against tax avoidance |
07 April 2005 |
In the combined cases of Halifax, BUPA and University of Huddersfield the Advocate General (AG) has issued his opinion in favour of Customs saying that arrangements which have the sole intention of obtaining a VAT advantage are an abuse of the tax system.
The UK government is hoping that the European Court of Justice (ECJ) will set a precedent that may be applied to other taxpayers who enter into what the government perceives to be unacceptable VAT planning.
Kendra Hann, indirect tax partner at Deloitte said: “This is a test case and although Customs will be pleased to receive the opinion, the AG also confirmed, ‘There is no... |

| Advocate General favours M&S claim for cross-border loss relief |
07 April 2005 |
The Advocate General (AG) has today (7/4/05) recommended to the European Court of Justice (ECJ) finding in favour of the taxpayer, in a case which has been watched closely by international business and Finance Ministers across Europe.
“This is a partial victory for M&S - they have won on a point of principle, but it is still not clear that they, and companies like them, will necessarily be successful in their claims,” comments Adam Craig, head of the EU tax practice at Deloitte in the UK. “The AG opinion, if followed by the ECJ, gives room for Member States to protect their revenues. The AG opinion says... |

| Chips are down for UK gaming industry |
06 April 2005 |
The sum total of the UK Government’s regeneration efforts on the back of mega casino licensing are down to just one “experimental” regional license.
Alex Kyriakidis, Global Head of Tourism, Hospitality and Leisure at Deloitte, says: “As a result of the Government’s deal to save parts of the Gaming Bill, the UK will no longer be on top of the US gaming industry’s investment list. The US operators, many of whom have made substantial investments in land options, will channel their development dollars in other emerging jurisdictions such as Macau and Singapore.
“A major issue facing the Government will be where to locate the first... |

| £100 billion pensions hit to UK companies’ balance sheets |
04 April 2005 |
New accounting standards requiring pension deficits to be recorded on the balance sheet could result in a £100 billion hit to UK companies this year, says professional services firm Deloitte. Whether the change will result in a downgrading of companies’ share prices will depend on the extent that pension deficits have already been factored in by the markets.
Under new accounting standards*, UK companies will record the total deficit for final salary pension schemes in full on the balance sheet. For example, Deloitte actuaries estimate the total pensions deficit of FTSE 100 companies to be around £50 billion at the current time,... |
