As the World Cup starts retailers and brewers will be watching the effects of sponsorship, advertising and product promotions on the sales of beer. Research from the business advisory firm, Deloitte, reveals 50% of British consumers believe brand is more important than price when choosing which beer* to buy. | Rates to remain on hold for the rest of the year |

The Monetary Policy Committee today decided to leave interest rates on hold at 4.5% for the tenth consecutive month, and rates are likely to remain there for the rest of the year too. Admittedly, the Committee has recently moved closer towards a rate hike as David Walton voted for an immediate interest rate increase at May’s meeting. Deloitte, the business advisory firm, has today launched a report which argues that the public sector is missing out on substantial savings as a result of not implementing shared services. Deloitte has today announced a number of senior appointments to its rapidly expanding specialist UK insurance team. Andy Todd will be joining as a partner, from Aviva, where he was director of tax for Aviva plc’s life business. Andy brings over 11 years experience in taxation issues affecting the financial services sector. Prior to joining Aviva in 2001, Andy spent over seven years at Arthur Andersen where, as a senior tax manager, he specialised in providing advice to major blue chip life and general insurance companies. Deloitte has announced today the admission of 38 new partners to the UK firm with effect from 1 June 2006. | Premiership wages drop for first time ever |

Deloitte’s latest Annual Review of Football Finance, released today, reports that Premiership clubs’ total wages have dropped for the first time in the league’s history. The report also confirms that, the Premiership clubs remain by far the biggest earners in world football, with the top 20 clubs generating over £1.3 billion in revenue.
