Deloitte survey reveals demand for government action to secure UK’s future energy needs 07 August 2008 A survey of UK utilities companies carried out by Deloitte, the business advisory firm, has identified the burning issues facing the industry including security of supply, meeting Government’s environmental targets and effective regulation.

Energy prices are an increasingly pressing issue and over a third of respondents believed price increases of 20-50% would be required to fund UK Government’s environmental commitments.

Deloitte appoints Paul Hanley to the Security team 01 August 2008 Deloitte, the business advisory firm, has announced today the appointment of Paul Hanley to the senior management team of Deloitte’s Security, Privacy & Resilience Group.

Paul joins from Cable & Wireless where he was Global Head of Corporate Security, holding responsibility for corporate security in 156 countries. Double-digit revPAR growth for Asia Pacific hoteliers 01 August 2008 Hotels in Asia Pacific continued their good fortune during the first six months of 2008, with revenue per available room (revPAR) up 13.2%, outperforming the 12% growth achieved in 2007. Analysis by Deloitte, the business advisory firm, shows that revPAR broke the US$100 milestone to reach US$103. Improvements were driven by double-digit increases in average room rates, which now stand at US$151.

Gap year travel plans 31 July 2008 As the academic year gets started again, a select group of school leavers will not be joining their class mates in university lecture halls for another year. 70 young people from across the UK have been awarded a gap year scholarship with Deloitte, the business advisory firm.

The nationwide gap year scheme offers schools leavers the chance to travel the world, while gaining some work experience and earn a good salary.  Participants in the ‘Scholars Scheme’ will join Deloitte offices around the country during autumn for a paid seven-month work placement. Entrepreneurs make developing talent a priority for business investment 30 July 2008 Entrepreneurs will make the recruitment and training of quality people their single biggest financial investment over the next 12 months, according to Entrepreneurship UK: 2008 a report by Deloitte, the business advisory firm.

In the survey nearly a third (31%) of entrepreneurial businesses identified a shortage of quality talent as the main barrier they face to achieving business growth.  However this has prompted many to recognise the need to address this issue by prioritising expenditure, with more than a quarter (27%) of businesses making the recruitment and training of quality a focus for investment.

Retail defies the downturn with 30% drop in administrations 30 July 2008 Deloitte, the business advisory firm, has announced today its analysis of the retail administration figures for the second quarter of 2008.

Lee Manning, reorganisation services partner at Deloitte commented: “Contrary to expectations, the latest retail administration figures show that there has been a drop of 16% in quarter two compared with the previous quarter and a staggering 30% drop in retail administrations for the first half of 2008 compared with the same period in 2007.
