01 March 2007 |
Investment Trust companies could save up to £40 million a year if the European Court of Justice (ECJ) upholds the Advocate General’s (AG) opinion on whether it is correct to charge VAT on fund management charges. If the ECJ follows the AG’s opinion, the management of close-end funds will be exempt from VAT. Whilst the AG opinion is not binding on the Court, it follows the AG opinion in the majority of cases. The Opinion was given today in the case of The Association of Investment Trust Companies and JP Morgan Fleming Claverhouse Investment Trust Fund Plc (AITC). The AITC case asked whether it is correct to charge VAT on the... |

George Budden, Merger Integration Advisory Service Partner at Deloitte, commented: “This year is a special year for China as the country celebrates the year of the golden pig, which only takes place once every 60 years. The launch event for the Road User Charging report, held today focussed on the need for “a road map” to set out strategies for dealing with road congestion. This report, by the Social Market Foundation (SMF), helps move the debate on, considering the options available including “a more measured approach in which road pricing is implemented in stages.” Speaking at the launch Ian Simpson, transport partner at Deloitte, said: “This is a complex issue where all options need to be understood and fully considered. | Smaller listed companies fail to bring women on board |

Women make up only 3% of AIM company boardrooms, compared to 10% in the FTSE 100; Executive director salary increases in AIM and FTSE SmallCap companies outpace FTSE 350; Bonus levels at smaller listed companies suggest greater link between performance and reward than in FTSE 350.
Women are even less likely to be appointed to the board of an AIM or FTSE SmallCap company than to a large FTSE 350 giant, according to a new study of listed companies with market capitalisation above £100 million by Deloitte, the business advisory firm. Only 3% of... |

| Telcos must flex their innovation muscle to benefit from Internet Television |
23 February 2007 |
Telecommunication companies need to flex their innovation muscle to exploit the demand for internet television. A new study by Deloitte says telecommunication companies risk bearing the brunt of carrying a vast amount of additional data without benefiting from the new services. David Tansley, Partner at Deloitte said: “Broadband-based internet protocol television (IPTV) needs to offer something unique and compelling to a two-way network. Interactive services will create higher data carrying costs but telcos are in a position to work with, and develop, these new services with content providers to share the risk and reward. New... |

| Court of Appeal victory for Mayflower Theatre Trust |
22 February 2007 |
The Court of Appeal has today ruled in favour of the Mayflower Theatre Trust Limited in its bid to recover a proportion of the VAT charged on the cost of hosting theatrical productions. The Trust had already won at the High Court, but HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) appealed the decision. The decision to dismiss HMRC’s appeal will enable many theatres across the country to increase the level of claims for VAT previously overpaid and may also reduce the costs of productions going forward. VAT exemption on ticket income for performances staged at theatres was introduced in 1996. As a result of the exemption, theatres were no longer... |

| Lowering mobile taxes boosts usage and fuels growth |
14 February 2007 |
Usage of mobile communications is a powerful economic growth engine, which governments can fuel by lowering taxes on mobile services and handsets, according to a new study undertaken by Deloitte for the GSM Association. The report suggests that in a developing country, an increase of 10 percentage points in mobile penetration will lift that country’s annual economic growth rate by 1.2 percentage points. That represents a major uplift - if the proportion of people with a mobile phone in an economy, growing at 4% a year, rises from 10% to 20% the economic growth rate could be boosted to 5.2% a year. Despite the evident... |

| Are law firm bonus plans delivering value? |
12 February 2007 |
A significant number of law firms operating bonus plans are not seeing the cost benefit of their arrangements, according to a survey conducted by Deloitte, the business advisory firm. A survey of 43 leading UK law firms (45% in the Top 30 by turnover), indicates that bonus structures operated in the legal sector typically consist of either broad-based arrangements for all employees; or ‘bespoke’ fee-earner plans linked to individual productivity targets such as chargeable hours. Around one-half of participants in the survey operating an incentive scheme have some form of broad-based arrangement, which generally pay out a... |
