Deloitte issues guidance for UK listed companies to tackle the latest reporting burden from Brussels 19 February 2007 A Deloitte report published today reveals that 86% of UK listed companies may need to produce additional reports to meet new reporting rules which came into force on January 20th. The report - Clear All Year: Considering new rules and practice in interim reporting - includes advice and guidance to assist companies in meeting the new requirements. It also surveys current reporting practices to determine the impact of the new rules.

Isobel Sharp, Audit Partner at Deloitte said: “These rules have come as a result of the implementation of the EU Transparency Obligations Directive which applies to all fully listed companies with periods...

Lowering mobile taxes boosts usage and fuels growth 14 February 2007 Usage of mobile communications is a powerful economic growth engine, which governments can fuel by lowering taxes on mobile services and handsets, according to a new study undertaken by Deloitte for the GSM Association.

The report suggests that in a developing country, an increase of 10 percentage points in mobile penetration will lift that country’s annual economic growth rate by 1.2 percentage points. That represents a major uplift - if the proportion of people with a mobile phone in an economy, growing at 4% a year, rises from 10% to 20% the economic growth rate could be boosted to 5.2% a year.

Are law firm bonus plans delivering value? 12 February 2007 A significant number of law firms operating bonus plans are not seeing the cost benefit of their arrangements, according to a survey conducted by Deloitte, the business advisory firm.

A survey of 43 leading UK law firms (45% in the Top 30 by turnover), indicates that bonus structures operated in the legal sector typically consist of either broad-based arrangements for all employees; or ‘bespoke’ fee-earner plans linked to individual productivity targets such as chargeable hours.

Around one-half of participants in the survey operating an incentive scheme have some form of broad-based arrangement, which generally pay out a...

Manufacturers miss out on R&D tax relief 12 February 2007 UK manufacturers are missing out on tens of millions of pounds of Research & Development (R&D) tax relief, with many companies not investigating whether their activities qualify for the benefit. Despite the definition of R&D for the purposes of tax relief becoming more clearly defined, research by Deloitte suggests that companies are still unaware of how wide the definition actually is, or do not involve their technical employees in the claim preparation process.

A survey of 560 Small and Medium Enterprises conducted last year found that 55% of businesses...

  • Real Madrid stays ahead of the competition with total revenue of £202m (€ 292m),
  • Barcelona are this year’s biggest movers, up four places to second place completing a top two for Spanish clubs.

Interest rate hold - relief for manufacturers who have seen 15% increase in administrations 08 February 2007 Commenting on the MPC decision to keep rates on hold, Jane Lodge, Manufacturing Industry leader at Deloitte said: “After last month’s surprise hike in rates, the decision to hold rates will come as welcome news to UK manufacturers.

“With the sector already showing signs of slowdown in the wake of increasing interest rates, manufacturers will be pleased that rates remain on hold. However, with the expectation of a rise to 5.5% there will be concerns for 2007.”

The comments come on the back of new analysis of manufacturing administration figures by...

The next rate rise is not far away 08 February 2007
  • The Monetary Policy Committee’s decision to not follow last month’s interest rate rise with another immediate increase does not mean that rates have peaked. I think interest rates will soon rise to 5.5%, perhaps as early as next month. And it is perfectly possible that interest rates will eventually need to rise as far as 6%.
  • The economic news released over the last month certainly supports the view that interest rates need to rise further. GDP growth rose from 2.9% in Q3 of last year to 3.0% in Q4 – the fastest rate of increase in two years. What’s more, the strength of the BCC activity survey suggests...
UK businesses addicted to quick fixes to cut costs 05 February 2007 According to a survey of British companies commissioned by Deloitte, one in four organisations in the FTSE 100 has carried out five or more cost reductions in the previous three years. Deloitte, the business advisory firm, warns that too many businesses damage their ability to achieve greater efficiencies and competitive advantage by cost cutting in fits and starts.

Patrick Doherty, head of cost reduction for the consulting practice at Deloitte, said: “For too many firms cost reduction activity is strictly for the bad times, only to be abandoned as soon business conditions get better. But companies need to think of cost-efficiency...
