Deloitte appoints new Chairman of the UK Board of Partners 01 June 2007 Deloitte, the business advisory firm, today announced the appointment of David Cruickshank as Chairman of the UK Board of Partners, with effect from 1 June 2007. David will succeed Martin Scicluna, who steps down from the role on 31 May 2007 after serving 12 years as Chairman.

David Cruickshank (48) has spent his entire career with the firm having joined as a trainee accountant in 1979 in the firm's Edinburgh office after graduating from the University of Edinburgh. He moved on qualification to the London office in 1982 and has specialised throughout his career in advising large corporates on their tax affairs. He became a partner...

New fraud laws to stop the carousel 01 June 2007 Friday June 1st 2007 sees the introduction of new rules making it harder for organised criminals to steal VAT from the UK taxpayer. Carousel fraud, otherwise known as Missing Trader Intra-Community (MTIC) fraud, is highly prevalent in the mobile phone and microchip distribution industries as they are both small items of high value.

The new VAT accounting system will be applied to mobile phones and computer chips. This will effectively remove the opportunity for missing trader fraud to occur in connection with these items and make sure that the full and correct taxes are paid on these products by all traders.

Deloitte wins prestigious best financial adviser at the public private finance awards 01 June 2007 Deloitte, the financial advisory firm, is delighted to be the recipient of the best financial adviser award at the recent Public Private Finance Awards ceremony. Premier League clubs’ profits are set to double 31 May 2007 Deloitte’s latest Annual Review of Football Finance, reveals that whilst the changes to the Premier League clubs’ financial results over the past three seasons have been fairly minimal, there are some big increases just around the corner.  According to the business advisory firm Deloitte, the combination of increases in revenue and reasonable wage cost control should almost double operating profits to £260m in the 2007/08 season.

Free daily health check for hotels 30 May 2007 Hotel operators promise their guests a good night’s sleep but often stay awake themselves worrying over how they are performing against their competitors. Responding to these industry concerns, Deloitte has today launched a Daily HotelBenchmark™ solution which gives hoteliers access to next day reporting for their hotel. Deloitte rules the corporate seas 29 May 2007 Deloitte, the business advisory firm, has retained the Industry sailing challenge trophy after shrugging off competition from crews from Npower, Kroll, Dupont and BP.

On the 10th and 11th May Deloitte entered 5 boats in the Challenge Trophy, which took place in Port Solent, Hampshire.  The crews represented the breadth of Deloitte service lines, regions and departments.

Pension schemes now in surplus 22 May 2007 Deloitte actuaries estimate that the pension schemes of the FTSE 100 companies now have an aggregate surplus relative to the accounting value of their liabilities. Pension deficits have fallen by £40 billion since the start of the year and are at the lowest level for more than five years.

The improvement has been fuelled by an increasing UK equity market and falls in the prices of bonds used to measure pension scheme liabilities.
