| UK manufacturing could lead low-carbon revolution shows EEF/Deloitte report |
26 June 2008 |
British industry has urged the government to recognise the vital role that business has to play in moving to a low-carbon economy, setting out the key policies needed to break down the current barriers to investment in key technologies where the UK can become a world leader. The call was made by EEF, the manufacturers’ organisation ahead of the publication of the renewables consultation/strategy by the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR) and following the publication of a report, ‘Delivering the Low Carbon Economy – Business Opportunities for UK Manufacturers’, produced by EEF in collaboration... |

| Greenpeace ranking sees electronic firms under pressure to go green |
25 June 2008 |
Today's ranking by Greenpeace of the world's most eco-friendly electronic firms will catch the attention of the consumer technology industry. The ranking is based on company policies and practices on toxic chemicals and recycling, as well as the energy efficiency of each company's products. Christy Kulasingam, technology director at Deloitte, comments: "In response to the growing concern about the environment in general, technology providers are increasingly being differentiated on the basis of their energy consumption, as has happened in a range of other sectors, from white goods to motor vehicles. Technology companies are also... |

| Deloitte response to Poynter, Burton and Cabinet Office reports on government data handling procedures |
25 June 2008 |
David Hughes a partner in Deloitte’s data security team said: "The matters raised in the Poynter, Burton and Cabinet Office reports reflect information security challenges that all organisations are facing, be they public or private sector. Addressing security concerns in any organisation is as much about people and processes - fixing the ‘human factors’ - as it is about the underlying technology.
A joined up approach that tackles governance, people, processes and technology is needed. In particular, getting the right culture and awareness in place so that keeping information secure becomes a part of normal working life is... |

| UK buy-out market dips to four year low |
25 June 2008 |
Latest figures from the Centre for Management Buy-out Research, founded by Deloitte and Barclays Private Equity, have shown that deals in the £100 – £500 million range, have finally bowed to the credit crunch and dropped to £3bn in 2008, compared with £7bn in H1 2007. The total size of the market in H1 08 is £11bn; the lowest first six months since 2004.
Mark Pacitti, corporate finance partner at Deloitte, commented: “While deals at the top end of the market were hit hard last year, the ‘mid market’ range had proved more resilient. However, the latest figures show that the private equity market is now feeling the credit crunch... |

| Public sector must make bold moves to build workforce capability and tackle poor performance |
24 June 2008 |
Based on interviews with senior figures in central and local government Bold Moves, a research report by business advisory firm Deloitte, highlights how public sector organisations need to match their strong record in policy formulation by shifting focus to improving the delivery and implementation of policy.
Bold Moves suggests that public sector organisations can build capabilities - new skills and capacities - across their workforces and use this as a mechanism to improve delivery. It also recognises that traditional boundaries and roles will change in response to a shifting requirement for public sector organisations to work... |

| Consumers to reduce insurance cover as credit crunch hits home |
21 June 2008 |
Retailers and restaurants may not be the only ones to feel the effects of reduced household spending following the credit crunch. Research by YouGov for Deloitte, the business advisory firm, has found that 26% of consumers who buy insurance from a price comparison site are looking to reduce their insurance spending. Only 40% of those surveyed said they definitely wouldn’t cut back on the insurance products they buy in the next 12 months to reduce the cost of their insurance policies. One in five consumers (21%) looking to reduce insurance spending said they would cut Payment Protection Insurance (PPI), which covers repayments on... |

| Deloitte comments on the latest retail sales figures from the ONS |
19 June 2008 |
Tarlok Teji, Head of Retail at Deloitte, said: "May 2007 was a very poor month and therefore it is perhaps not surprising to see an increase in sales for May 2008. Last month saw heavy discounting, especially around the two Bank Holiday weekends and this along with some fine weather brought shoppers back to the High Street. However, these numbers are really just a blip and the longer term picture is one of falling consumer spending and declining sales. Retailers will most certainly have made the most of May but will be preparing for tougher times to come." Richard Hyman, strategic adviser to Deloitte's Consumer Business practice,... |
