Record insurance reserve releases protect UK motor insurance profitability 30 November 2007 Commercial lines more profitable than personal lines
Investment returns contribute to £600m profit

Deloitte’s analysis of FSA returns has found that in 2006 motor insurers had a net operating ratio of 101.4%, the sixth year of clear operating profit. However, the headline results mask a significant downturn in underlying operating performance, as insurers released more than £800m from their reserves to offset poor underwriting experience.

Fastest growing EMEA high-tech firms identified 27 November 2007 Average growth rates highest since Fast 500 began in 2001, confidence high despite economic uncertainties.

  • The UK has the most ranked companies with 81 of the 500, closely followed by France with 68.
  • Israeli firms take first, second and third place.
  • Average five-year revenue growth for all companies is 1443 percent, the highest since the awards began.
  • Survey of Fast 500 CEOs reveals that 79.5% of this year’s CEOs were extremely or very confident of managing the same growth rates over the coming two years.

Deloitte Global Chairman becomes IBLF Trustee 27 November 2007 John Connolly, Chairman of Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu and Deloitte UK’s Chief Executive and Senior Partner, has become a trustee of the International Business Leaders Forum (IBLF).

Deloitte appoints Sharia’a Scholar to Islamic Finance Practice 27 November 2007 Deloitte, the business advisory firm has appointed Mufti Hassan Kaleem as Sharia'a scholar to their Islamic Finance practice. Deloitte is the first big four firm to appoint a Sharia’a scholar, whom is required to ensure that products and transactions are fully Sharia’a-compliant.

Islamic Finance currently accounts for around 1-2% of the global financial services industry, yet with Muslims accounting for approximately 20% of the world’s population and growing, the market is likely to see continuing double digit growth.

UK population anticipates fall out of ‘credit crunch’ and recent market turmoil 26 November 2007 The UK working population expects the recent market turmoil due to the ‘credit crunch’, sparked by defaults in the US sub prime sector, to have a negative affect on the UK economy.  47% believe it will have a slight negative impact on the competitive position of the UK economy and 14% believe it will have a significant negative impact, according to a third annual Deloitte/YouGov survey of attitudes to global economic competition published today to coincide with the 2007 CBI annual conference.

Deloitte research shows half of UK consumers save for Christmas 24 November 2007
  • Northern Ireland is home to the most Christmas savers;
  • The Welsh are most likely to pay for Christmas by credit card;
  • Young women and older men save for the festive season

Half of UK consumers save for Christmas, according to research by business advisory firm Deloitte.  50% of British people surveyed said they have saved money for year-end purchases, with young women and the Northern Irish leading the way.

Benefiting at Deloitte 21 November 2007 Deloitte, the business advisory firm has added some new options to the flexible benefits scheme offered to all staff. From January 2007, all staff will have the option of choosing BUPA health assessments and identity theft protection, in addition to a range of other options.  Deloitte employees can purchase these benefits from an annual benefits allowance, which is given to staff as part of their reward package.

FTSE 350 companies are increasingly complying with the provisions of the Combined Code, however, a significant number still fail to meet the recommended 50:50 boardroom ratio of executive to non-executive directors, according to research by Deloitte. Independent directors make up less than half of the board at more than one in ten (11%) FTSE 100 companies and almost one third (29%) of FTSE 250 organisations.

Deloitte names UK partner as global head of tax for financial services 14 November 2007 Deloitte, the business advisory firm, has named Ellie Patsalos, a senior partner in its UK firm, as its global head of tax for the financial services industry.

Ellie, a tax partner in the firm’s Global Employer Solutions group, is the first woman to be appointed to Deloitte’s global tax executive and has also recently been named as a vice chairperson of the UK firm.

All things bright and digital: Shopping online and demand for high-tech items sees huge lift 13 November 2007 Use of the internet for the bulk of Christmas shopping has doubled since 2006 (14% in 2007, versus 7% in 2006), according to the Annual Christmas Retail Survey published today by business advisory firm Deloitte. 74% of consumers will use online or mail order in some way for their Christmas shopping and two thirds (66%) of consumers will research or purchase goods online compared to half of the population (51%) last year. Consumer appetite for all things high tech will reach new heights over the festive period.
