Tackling the phishing problem 10 January 2007 Tricking IT users into providing details of user names and passwords is not a new concept.  All of us have encountered a phishing e-mail in some form or another along the lines of “An error occurred during your last login and we were unable to properly identify you.  Please click on the following link to verify your details else the account will be disabled.”  You are then redirected to a fake website where you are requested to enter confidential information which is used by the attacker to access your real account.

The disturbing aspect of a phishing attack is that it is not launched from within the...

Accountancy - The Fast-Track For Women In Business 24 October 2006 Women have come a long way in business and government in the last ten years.  They have stepped up to more leadership and executive roles and occupy many senior financial positions in commerce and industry as financial directors, group tax managers and the like.  We have seen a lot of fundamental and positive changes and we are going to see increasing numbers of women at all levels of leadership.  The fast-track to these positions is the chartered accountancy qualification.

The CA qualification is internationally accepted, respected and highly-paid.  It opens up opportunities to specialise in disciplines...

Do you need a Transfer Pricing Policy Document? 18 October 2006 A lot of confusion has arisen from the addendum to the South African Revenue Service (SARS) transfer pricing practice note 7 as to whether a company needs a transfer pricing (TP) policy document or not.

SARS felt it necessary to issue the addendum because they said that some advisers had been informing taxpayers that they must have a TP pricing document and that not to submit such a document with the tax return means an incomplete return.  This is not correct - what the addendum clarifies is that it is not a statutory requirement but it is often in the taxpayer’s best interests to have such a document. Why is this...

Royalty Taxes - Who should Pay? 18 October 2006 Local franchisees and agents of foreign franchisors need to ensure that they don’t slip up on paying royalties tax.

The payment of tax on royalties to non-residents can be tricky when it comes to giving the South African taxman his due.

As the law stands, specifically section 35 of the Income Tax Act, No 58 of 1962 (“the Act”), any person who incurs a liability to pay any royalty (or a payment in respect of the right of use of intellectual knowledge or information, herein jointly referred to as a royalty) to a non-resident person, or any person who receives a payment of such an amount on behalf of such...

Beware of Cyber Criminals, we are all Vulnerable 11 October 2006

In this digital age, where easy access to, and transmission of, vital information (be it business strategic or personal) is seen as a key value proposition, new threats have emerged that must be addressed, says Kris Budnik, director of Security Services Group, Deloitte, speaking at an event hosted by Tip-offs Anonymous, the leading provider of anonymous and independent hotlines in Southern Africa.

What cyber forensics means to the world and all the people in it. 18 September 2006

When thinking about the words cyber forensics, one easily steers away from what it means on the pretext that it is a technical term that does not impact the man on the street.  However, this is far from true.  Cyber forensics and electronic related law such as the ECT Act (Electronic and Communication Transaction Act) is very applicable to all who use electronic systems to communicate and do business.

New Age Incentive Schemes 18 September 2006

A number of recent developments, not least the disclosure of significant incentive payments to certain senior executives, have placed executive pay and share-based incentives under the spotlight. Responsible companies are now reviewing their own approach to these schemes.

Among recent trends are: the crusade for improved corporate governance, compliance and...

Negative Sentiment Impacts Private Equity Industry 18 September 2006 The volatility of the exchange rate and the prospect of a tightening interest rate cycle have been the major factors contributing to positive sentiment taking an about-turn in quarters 2 and 3 of 2006.  In fact, there has been a sharp increase in negative sentiment in the economic and market climate, according to the findings of the fourth forward-looking South African Private Equity Confidence Survey conducted by Deloitte in conjunction with the Southern African Venture Capital and Private Equity Association.

According to Peter de Villiers, a Corporate Finance Manager at Deloitte, the raising of new funds is expected to be...
