The latest status symbol to have your own taxman. The 500 wealthiest people in the country have been sent letters by the South African Revenue Service SARS in forming them that they will be assigned their own individual tax assessor.

| Exchange controls, incentives to save tipped for budget |

World Cup incentives further relaxation of exchange controls greater incentives to save and a possible windfall tax on the petroleum industry were tipped yesterday as being likely to be covered in Finance Minister Trevor Manuel's budget next week. Deloitte South Africa tax director Bill Joubert said a further relaxation in exchange controls could happen but it was unlikely the regulations would be abolished altogether.

| Low earners 'to get tax break' |

The National Treasury is likely to focus on easing tax obligations for low income earners, small businesses and BEE deals, according to auditing firm Deloitte, which held a budgetary preview press conference yesterday. Last year Finance Minister Trevor Manuel said: "This is the year of plenty when all South Africans will reap the fruits of economic growth." In that budget tax cuts for individuals added up to R19,l billion with a net benefit for individuals of R12, 1bn. |
