Following a public outcry on the taxation as a fringe benefit of medical treatment that HIV+ employees received from their employers, the tax law was changed last year (2006) to exempt this benefit from tax. In the quest for a healthy and productive staff and to curb health-related absenteeism, some employers introduced programmes in terms of which they provided medical treatment to their HIV+ employees. These programmes were aimed mainly at benefiting lower level employees who are typically not members of medical aid schemes and cannot afford the cost of medical treatment for their condition.
