Globalisation has resulted in significant increases in movement of goods around the world. The World Customs Organisation (WCO) is tasked with the implementation of a numerical coding system (called the Harmonised Commodity coding system) which effectively assigns a number to product groups which are moved around the world. South African criminals appear to enjoy the wealth that they derive from crime and, instead of hiding this wealth, it is displayed in the purchase of vehicles and real estate. This is one of the findings of a study of major money laundering trends in South Africa in 2001-2002 carried out by the Centre for the Study of Economic Crime (CenSEC) at RAU University.
