The NSW public sector have embraced sustainability reporting and are playing an influential role in promoting sustainable practices across its supply chain, and into the private sector.
According to Deloitte’s “Sustainability Reporting - A survey of NSW Government” an impressive 70% of those surveyed have prepared such a report in the last three years.
The survey of 20 leading NSW Government agencies, departments and State Owned Corporations also showed that since the introduction of the voluntary “NSW Whole of Government Sustainability Principles” in July 2006, 84% of the survey participants had taken some form of action in the first four months.
Dennis Krallis, Deloitte Government Services Partner, said a high proportion of organisations surveyed have been actively involved in developing sustainability frameworks, policies and procedures for sustainability reporting.
“The fact that 70% of the participants had prepared a report in the last three years suggests a real commitment by the NSW public sector to sustainability.
“All of those surveyed demonstrated a good understanding of how the management of sustainability and non–financial risks contribute to Government operations, products and services, in addition to catering for the legitimate interests of stakeholder groups, either directly or indirectly,” Mr Krallis said.
David Newhouse, Deloitte National Leader for Environment and Sustainability Services said the survey highlighted a need for a more standardised framework for sustainable reporting.
“The NSW public sector has used a combination of tools to develop their internal frameworks and to report back to their stakeholders on their sustainability performance each year.
“This highlights that there is no ‘one-size-fits-all approach to sustainability reporting, reflecting the different levels of maturity and different needs behind the production of a sustainability report.
