Should we provide earnings guidance? How do we attract and retain the best talent? How much off shoring makes sense? How much should we spend on sustainability?
These are just some of the questions that are keeping Chief Financial Officers (CFOs) awake at night according to When CFOs Debate, a new publication from professional services firm, Deloitte. Understanding both the risks and opportunities are essential if the CFO is to provide much needed certainty to their organisation’s employees, customers and shareholders in these volatile economic times.
Today’s finance leader is playing an increasingly demanding role where he or she is torn between scaling back to protect profits, building up cash to withstand the downturn or capitalising on instability to gain market share. Understanding which way to turn requires experience, insight and a steady hand.
In the When CFOs Debate booklet, Deloitte has brought the pros and cons of all these strategies together for the first time. When CFOs Debate recognises that there are few “right” answers to most of the big questions facing the CFO in these volatile times.
Donal Graham, consulting partner and leader of Deloitte’s CFO services practice said: “This is an unprecedented and demanding time for CFOs. Many may not have experienced this type of volatile economic situation before, so they are being forced to learn as they go.
“When CFOs Debate is a practical tool to help CFOs as they evaluate all possible outcomes of the choices they face and help in the decision-making process.”
The booklet begins with a questionnaire that allows a CFO to benchmark the current performance of his or her finance function, before presenting a snap shot of the various arguments for and against each of the key strategic choices they face.
According to Graham: “Although there may not be one right answer to each issue in the booklet, the information should help CFOs consider all of the variables and encourage them to bring others into the decision-making process.
