Telecommunication companies need to flex their innovation muscle to exploit the demand for internet television. A new study by Deloitte says telecommunication companies risk bearing the brunt of carrying a vast amount of additional data without benefiting from the new services.
David Tansley, Partner at Deloitte said: “Broadband-based internet protocol television (IPTV) needs to offer something unique and compelling to a two-way network. Interactive services will create higher data carrying costs but telcos are in a position to work with, and develop, these new services with content providers to share the risk and reward. New advertising models based on direct feedback also offer great potential.”
“Telco operators could position the service as an affordable way for all content providers to deliver niche media to a growing mass market. Subsidising technology take-up combined with long term contracts has proven to stimulate rapid growth.
“Telecoms companies should not wait to make the traditional access-based business model work,” he continued, “but instead flex their innovation muscle to deliver new services.”
