Business advisory firm Deloitte today kicked off the BBC Radio 3 ‘Singers in the City’ initiative by becoming the first of seven city firms to perform a concert with the BBC Singers (the UK's only full time professional choir) at its Strand offices in London.

More than 45 Deloitte choir members from across the firm - including partners and recent graduates ­- participated in the concert attended by more than 100 guests from the BBC and Deloitte.

Deloitte partner Ed Shedd commented: “We are delighted to be hosting the inaugural Singers in the City event and look forward to working with the BBC singers further in their endeavours to develop workplace choirs. The Deloitte Choir is now 50 members strong, and as well as representing an important social network it has been very successful in raising funds for the charities we support.”

‘Singers in the City’ is part of the BBC Singers’ GoSing! project, which celebrates and supports amateur singers, part of dedicated to the promotion of workplace choirs. In its first year, GoSing! will develop projects celebrating and supporting amateur singing in schools and workplaces across London.

As well as promoting the development of workplace choirs GoSing! aims to build audiences for the BBC Singers and Radio 3.

Following seven concerts between January and July 2007, the ‘Singers in the City’ initiative has ambitious plans for 2008 which include a major choral event with all seven city firm choirs at a City of London venue, along with a new commission of choral music about the City of London. ‘Singers in the City’ also hope to link these company choirs with school choirs in a mentoring programme, which will support GoSing! as it develops in its second year.
