Deloitte, the business advisory firm, today announced the appointment of Dame Sue Street, Permanent Secretary at the Department of Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), to its public sector practice in January 2007 following her retirement from the Civil Service in September 2006.

Dame Sue Street, one of the most influential women in Whitehall, has held senior roles across several major Government departments during her civil service career, and was appointed a Permanent Secretary in 2001.  In addition, she spent three years as a management consultant in private practice in the mid-1990s.

Her role at Deloitte will include advising on the Government’s public sector reform agenda, bringing expertise, insights and value to our clients in the public and private sectors.  Dame Sue will work closely with Head of Government and Public Sector for Deloitte, Mike Turley, and with Heather Hancock who runs the firm’s Public Policy business. Her focus will be on strategic support to Deloitte’s public sector leadership, and in an advisory role with clients.

John Connolly, Deloitte Senior Partner and Chief Executive, commented: “We are delighted to welcome Dame Sue Street to Deloitte.  Dame Sue brings a wealth of experience of the realities of policy making and delivery at the centre of Government.  This will further deepen our expertise in the public sector arena.  Dame Sue is one of the longest standing Permanent Secretaries in Whitehall today.  Her appointment to Deloitte is just one of a series we are making across our industry teams, ensuring our clients benefit from the unique insights and innovative perspectives of leading industry experts.

Dame Sue commented “I am greatly looking forward to working with Deloitte.  Throughout my career I have strongly believed that the public and private sectors have much to learn from each other.  Our public services need to be intelligent and discerning clients.  And consultants offering their expertise need to enhance the capability, pace and professionalism of public service delivery.  Deloitte has a plethora of drive and talent, which I hope to support with my experience and commitment to good government and public service reform.”

Mike Turley, head of Deloitte’s public sector practice added: “Deloitte’s public sector team is highly regarded in the market.  Dame Sue’s appointment will further enhance our ability to provide strategic advice that goes to the heart of the delivery and reform challenge for Government.  We are increasingly recognised for helping our clients understand how to execute Government policy, matching our strong track record in implementing and delivering public services to the public.  Dame Sue Street has been at the heart of Government for many years: we look forward to her privileged perspective adding a fresh dimension to our services to public sector clients.”

Notes to editors

Under the rules on the acceptance of outside appointments by Crown servants, Dame Sue applied for permission to accept this appointment. The Prime Minister, on the advice of the Advisory Committee on Business Appointments, approved the application subject to the automatic three-month waiting period from her last day of service and the conditions that, for 12 months from the same date, she should stand aside from any work relating to DCMS sectors, and should not be personally involved in lobbying UK Government ministers or officials on behalf of her new employer.
