Tomorrow (27th January) is the closing date for the first consultation commissioned by the Gambling Commission. The consultation on regulation and licensing is the first step towards implementing the Gaming Act introduced last year. However, although the Gambling Commission is developing frameworks for the industry, there continues to be debate as to the number of super casino licenses which should be allowed in the UK.
Alex Kyriakidis, Global Head of Tourism, Hospitality and Leisure at Deloitte, says: “Momentum is building for the establishment of more than one super casino with pressure from stakeholders mounting across the industry and political landscape. The Gambling Commission finds itself in a difficult position, mandated to select just one location for the super casino they have received a significant number of expressions of interest from local authorities, many with valid regeneration cases for locations across the country.
“Blackpool is perceived to be the favourite location as it has put the proposal for a super casino at the heart of its regeneration plans, however many other local authorities also have strong cases.
”In any case, a super casino licence, in only one location, will not provide a valid pilot, it is unlikely to prove or disprove anything. Following extensive consultation for over four years, a broad consensus emerged for eight super casino licences. Lost in the run up to the election this may yet emerge again.”
