International Talent Pool to Alleviate South Africa's Skills Shortage
Published: 05/12/07

An unusual source of skilled personnel has been discovered by Deloitte.  The firm is the first of the consulting firms to render a service by sourcing offshore the skills that are in short supply in South Africa.

“We at Deloitte are actively assisting government to accomplish its skills growth plan by establishing an international skills pool and sourcing overseas talent, we are then able to assist our clients with the entire process of getting the foreigner here and settled in” says Tessa Supra, Manager Global Employer Services at Deloitte.  “This process will also enable the upskilling and empowering of the South African workforce.”

“Russia is an example of a country with a large number of highly specialised skills and it presents an exciting opportunity for co-operation between South Africa and Russia,” says Supra.

South Africa is experiencing a talent shortage of crisis proportions, particularly in the engineering and mining disciplines and Deloitte is in the process of setting up meaningful relationships with various international recruiting networks in order to address the issue.

Supra continues, “Deloitte will source scarce skills offshore as quickly and cost effectively as possible for its clients, for short, medium and long term contracts.  But our priority is first to seek qualified South African candidates.  Deloitte is also passionate about growing the South African talent pool in the medium and long term consisting of young potential talent.  This exciting pool is developed through various services that we offer such as our Jumpstart programme, whereby each Grade 12 pupil in South Africa will get a copy of this comprehensive career guide as well as guidance. The Deloitte Academy also offers a training programme to young graduates whereby they upskill the graduates according to the specifications of our clients in a selection of training programmes that we offer.  Where  a client has an urgent need and there is a shortage in South Africa, we will intervene and assist the client through our international network to obtain the necessary skills abroad.  Deloitte will handle all the immigration processes, South African work permits, visas, tax equalisation, employment contracts and home relocation for the foreign candidates.”

The normal recruitment process is followed and then elevated to our international network if the South African market is unable to provide to the specifications of our clients.

“The sectors in South Africa that could benefit immensely from this intervention are: Banking, Construction, Automotive, Mining, Engineering and Agriculture,” concludes Supra.
