Budapest, November 16, 2004 — The winner of Deloitte's 2004 environmental reporting award is Dreher Breweries Ltd. Deloitte founded the so-called "Green Frog Award" in 2001 for Central and Eastern European companies that prepare the best annual environmental or sustainability reports. The event was also attended by Dr. Miklós Persányi, Minister for the Environment and Water Management.
By founding this award Deloitte on the one hand aimed to prepare the companies of the region for participating in similar competitions in the EU and on the other hand tried to encourage Central and Eastern European companies to prepare this important documentation, uniquely suitable to communicate results achieved in environment protection, in ever growing numbers and to an improving quality regarding both form and content. "We were quite content to see that the Green Frog Award is growing in popularity with domestic companies and the number of applications is increasing," said Robert Reiniger, Deloitte's partner in charge of Environmental Services.
The criteria for granting the award are the same as those for the European Union's similar award; this year several sustainability reports were also entered into the competition that were prepared in compliance with the EU's most recent (Global Reporting Initiative - GRI) directives.
Deloitte is a leader in developing methodologies for preparing and controlling reports (sustainability reports) throughout Europe. Our professionals are also actively involved in the work of the European Union's Award Committee.
The award is granted by an international panel appointed by but independent of Deloitte. This year the panel included the representatives of the following organizations: the Environmental Department of the EBRD, an external expert of the World Business Council for Sustainability Development, a lecturer of the Central European University, the representative of the Central European Centre for Environment Protection and an environmental journalist for HVG.
The following entities applied in 2004: Audi Hungaria Motor Kft, BorsodChem Rt., British American Tobacco Hungary, Budapesti Erőmű Rt, Csepeli Erőmű Rt., Dreher Sörgyárak Rt., Magyar Villamos Művek Rt., Matáv Rt, Opel Magyarország Autóipari Kft., Tetra Pak Rt., Tiszai Vegyi Kombinát Rt.
Robert Reiniger also added: "Deloitte deems it one of its important tasks to promote the preparation of environmental reports — a form of reporting that has been used in the EU for over a decade — also in Hungary and to ensure that more and more of these reports meet the stringent requirements posed by EU membership. There has been a provision in the Act on the Environment for more than three years that the government may determine the group of entities obliged to prepare environmental reports (sustainability reports) and the content thereof. It is expected, therefore, that a law will be enacted in the near future in this regard as a result of which the group of those companies that have voluntarily prepared such reports thus far will be extended with those that are statutorily obliged to do so."
