Brussels, Belgium, April 28, 2004 — Health Information Network Europe (HINE) will present an upbeat view of current market developments in healthcare at the European eHealth Ministerial Conference to be hosted by the Irish Government next month in Cork as part of the Irish Presidency of the European Union. This two day conference, to be held on 5-6 May 2004, will provide European Health Ministers with an opportunity to report progress over the past 12 months towards agreed goals for eHealth to transform and improve traditional care delivery processes.
Evolution of pan-European eHealth market
HINE will spotlight key trends in the evolution of a pan-European market for eHealth that are stimulating demand for effective ICT support at the point of care. Some of these trends include:
- ICT market heading for unprecedented expansion
- Demographic pressures driving radical change
- Consumers demanding more and better services
- Clinical complexity requiring more IT support
- Medico-legal developments impacting services
- Healthcare productivity lagging behind other sectors
Practical benefits of large-scale ICT support
Presentations from leading multinational organisations Agfa, Cerner and Intersystems will focus on key practical benefits realised by effective large-scale use of IT to support process transformation in emerging health communities. Panel discussions will enable delegates to compare global trends in healthcare IT with local market needs in Europe and establish a clearer view of new evolving strategic directions.
Need for Government intervention in healthcare ICT
HINE will identify specific areas where Government intervention is needed to accelerate deployment of ICT for clinical process transformation and modernisation of care delivery.
Areas where Government intervention is needed:
- Articulating a common vision for eHealth
- Providing support for shared infrastructure
- Creating effective industry partnerships
- Securing adequate levels of project funding
- Coping with legacy system interoperability
- Integrating different technology standards
Unique benchmark for European eHospital progress
At the Cork conference, HINE will also showcase the 2004 European Hospital Census. This important survey is being conducted for HINE by HBS Consulting, and provides a unique snapshot of ICT status in 900 hospitals across 14 different European country markets. Provision of adequate ICT support for the acute hospital sector is an essential first step in establishing seamless eHealth services in the wider community. For the first time, this European Hospital Census will provide a consistent baseline against which future progress towards eHealth can be measured.
