New York, April 3, 2003 – The tax practices of the North American member firms of Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu were awarded high rankings for their advisory services and compliance capabilities in a recent survey of corporate tax decision makers conducted by International Tax Review.  Deloitte & Touche in Canada and the United States received top rankings among categories that rated North American tax advisers for overall capabilities, excellence within national regions and practitioners on an individual basis.

International Tax Review is one of the world’s most authoritative magazines dedicated to tax news and issues for corporate tax directors, finance directors and other senior executives.  The results of the annual survey are compiled from more than 4,800 votes for individuals or firms from in-house corporate tax experts and chief financial officers at leading companies and financial institutions in Canada and the United States.

The North American survey is one of four annual regional surveys conducted by International Tax Review during the year.  The other surveys focus on the leading tax advisers in Europe, Asia and Latin America, and are announced in June, September and December, respectively.

“We are extremely pleased with the results of this survey,” said Jerry Leamon, Global Managing Partner for Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu Tax Services. “Our vision to be recognized as the best tax practice in the world can only be attained through achieving and sustaining excellence in client service.  These surveys provide valuable tools for measuring client recognition of our skills, advisory excellence and service delivery.  We are very proud of the significant results achieved in this survey by our North American practices.”

The U.S. and Canadian firms both took top honors in the survey’s two overall categories of Tax Planning and Tax Transactions.  Both also received first or second place rankings in all six specialty service categories—Mergers and Acquisitions, Transfer Pricing, Capital Markets, Cross-border Structuring, Indirect Taxes, and State & Local taxes.  Eleven Deloitte & Touche practitioners were listed among the top 20 individuals cited for individual excellence.

In a section of the survey devoted to respondents’ attitudes about the tax adviser market and selection criteria, nearly 80 percent of participants indicated that their dependence on third-party advice is either the same in 2003 as it was last year, or is increasing.  Forty-five percent said they review outside advisers once a year, and the top three criteria cited for adviser selection are knowledge, people and industry-specific expertise.  A full report on survey results appears in the April issue of International Tax Review and on their website at www.internationaltaxreview.com.

Barry Salzberg, Managing Partner for Deloitte & Touche Tax Services in the U.S., added, “We are grateful for this vote of confidence in our ability to serve leading U.S. companies with distinction.  Our goal is to provide the highest level of service to our clients, and these honors go a long way in helping us measure progress toward that goal.”

Mark Robinson, Managing Partner for Deloitte & Touche Tax Services in Canada, said, “This type of market feedback is extremely valuable — and gratifying.  Many of the participants in the survey are our clients and prospective clients, so it is helpful to see how they view us through an independent survey.”
