Meet Tom Captain
Vice Chairman, Global and U.S. Aerospace & Defense Leader, Deloitte LLP

Tom Captain is vice chairman and Global and U.S. Aerospace & Defense (A&D) leader for Deloitte LLP. In this role, Tom provides industry specialization to client teams and spearheads initiatives to enhance Deloitte’s position in the marketplace. He continues to be actively involved in major client assignments within the industry, providing consulting services to Fortune 500 companies in the A&D industry. In addition, he is a senior member of the Global Aviation practice.

Since joining Deloitte LLP in 1981, Tom has specialized in operational restructuring, industry strategy, investor due diligence, cost reduction, product development, engineering operations, manufacturing productivity improvement, information systems and program management across multiple functions.

Tom’s A&D industry experience spans commercial passenger and freighter aircraft, military fighter/attack and cargo aircraft, defense electronics, avionics, launch vehicles, satellites, net-centric warfare, destroyer, aircraft carrier, missiles, munitions and land armament programs. He has been involved with some of the major industry consolidation, merger and transformation initiatives in the United States, Europe and the Asia Pacific regions.

Tom has extensive experience with commercial passenger and cargo aviation markets, having advised various organizations in assessing the market size and demand patterns, competitive offerings and specific strategies. He has assisted airline creditors in bankruptcy filings and reorganization plans.

Tom has been quoted extensively in Aviation Week & Space Technology regarding the performance of the industry and has written several opinion-editorial articles. In addition, he serves as a regular contributor to its annual “Top Performing Companies” report. Tom is a regular speaker at industry symposiums and conferences, including the Society of Automotive Engineering – Aerospace Engineering Group, the Management Roundtable, the International Industrial Engineering Conference and the Center for Business Intelligence. He served as the keynote presenter at Aerospace Futures Alliance and Washington Governor’s Aerospace Council Convention regarding  “Aerospace Competitiveness in Washington.”

Tom received a master of business administration degree from Seattle University and a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Washington. He also completed the executive education program at the University of Pennsylvania, Wharton School of Business.

Tom is a member of the Seattle University Business School Dean’s Executive Advisory Board. He contributed to the Puget Sound Regional Council’s Prosperity Partnership Aerospace Competitiveness Initiative and is a member of the Patrons of Northwest Civic & Charitable Organizations Board of Directors, a former trustee of the Museum of History and Industry’s Board and a past president of the Institute of Management Consultants, Pacific Northwest Chapter.
