Deloitte & Touche LLP and CPM Global Assurance announce completion of our 5th annual survey of business continuity professionals. The industry – and the profession – are growing steadily and are assuming a greater role in corporate planning and management.

We analyzed the responses we received to identify industry trends and developments, such as the significance of third-party continuity activities, frequency of program exercising, and the current state of business continuity budgets. Some of the key findings include:

  • The governance of Business Continuity Management continues to be an area of weakness for many companies. Two-thirds of those surveyed indicated they still do not have a process to ensure that an appropriate BCM program is maintained.
  • Almost 60 percent of the respondents do not provide any training for their total employee population to help them understand their roles and the required procedures following a disruptive event.
  • Only 28 percent of the respondents indicated that they both know their third-party dependencies and understand what those third-parties’ recovery capabilities are.

Concerns about terrorism, as well as more traditional incidents that disrupt business and government, keeps the issue of business continuity on management’s radar screens. The perception of disruptions has changed dramatically in recent years. Focus has moved away from large natural disasters, as companies now consider threats to their business continuance to include operational and technical disruptions. This is most readily seen by the adjustment in how people refer to the industry. No longer is the nomenclature “Disaster Recovery,” but rather “Business Continuity.”
