The rich clinical content in Clinical Information Systems (CIS) offers the potential to greatly improve the quality of patient care. Early adopters of CIS already have reported numerous benefits related to patient care and reduced expenditures. However, two primary barriers — funding and adoption — must be addressed before advanced technologies such as CIS can enable physicians to deliver the enhanced care that will improve patient safety. 

This point of view by the Deloitte Center for Health Solutions (the Center), a part of Deloitte LLP, addresses the barriers to physician adoption of advanced CIS. It explores ways to overcome funding and behavioral challenges in order to promote physician adoption of advanced CIS. Center staff members have interviewed those with subject-matter knowledge, physicians and hospital administrators who have successfully implemented CIS to develop the helpful ideas, case studies and lessons that this point of view contains.
